NIRF Rankings 2025: Top Universities, Colleges & 10 Major Insights
Every year, lakhs of students and parents search for one thing before admissions: which college is actually the best? The most trusted government answer to that question is the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), run by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
On 4 September 2025, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the India Rankings 2025 — the 10th edition of NIRF. This year, 7,692 unique institutions took part with 14,163 applications across 17 categories, the highest participation ever. IIT Madras kept the No. 1 spot in the Overall category, IISc Bengaluru again topped Universities, Hindu College led Colleges and IIM Ahmedabad led Management.
In this guide, Guidevera breaks down the full top-10 lists for the most searched categories, the biggest changes compared with 2024, and — most importantly — how you should (and shouldn't) use NIRF when choosing a college or an online degree.
Key Fact: NIRF is India's official government ranking of higher education institutions. It ranks institutions on five parameters — Teaching, Learning & Resources (30%), Research & Professional Practice (30%), Graduation Outcomes (20%), Outreach & Inclusivity (10%) and Perception (10%). Always check the category that matches your course, not just the Overall list.

10 Major Insights from NIRF Rankings 2025
1. IIT Madras is No. 1 for the 7th year in a row
IIT Madras has topped the Overall category every year since 2019, and Engineering every year since 2016. In 2025 it also took No. 1 in Innovation and in the brand-new SDG category — four No. 1 positions for a single institution.
2. IISc completes a decade at the top of Universities
IISc Bengaluru has been the No. 1 university in every NIRF edition from 2016 to 2025 and also leads the Research Institutions list. Its university score (85.05) is 14 points ahead of No. 2 JNU (71.00).
3. Record participation — 7,692 institutions
Participation has grown from 2,426 unique institutions in 2016 to 7,692 in 2025 (about 217% growth), and applications from 3,565 to 14,163. More institutions now treat NIRF as a benchmark, which makes a top-100 rank harder to earn.
4. A new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category
For the first time, NIRF ranked institutions on how their campuses, research and practices support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This takes the total to 17 categories and signals that “green” and socially responsible practices now count.
5. Negative marking for retracted research papers
NIRF 2025 introduced negative scoring under the Research & Professional Practice parameter for retracted publications. Research quality and integrity, not just quantity, now directly affect rank — a change that visibly moved some positions in the Dental and University lists.
6. Private universities are rising in the University list
Manipal Academy of Higher Education moved up to No. 3 (from No. 4 in 2024) and BITS Pilani entered the University top 10 at No. 7. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is No. 8, and SRM (No. 11) and VIT (No. 14) sit just outside.
7. BHU returns to the Overall top 10
Banaras Hindu University is No. 10 Overall in 2025 (No. 11 in 2024), while IIT Guwahati slipped from No. 9 to No. 11. AIIMS Delhi (No. 8) and JNU (No. 9) remain the only non-IIT/IISc names alongside BHU.
8. Delhi colleges still dominate
Six of the top 10 colleges are in Delhi. Hindu College stays No. 1 ahead of Miranda House, and Hans Raj College moves up to No. 3. Tamil Nadu (PSGR Krishnammal and PSG) and Kolkata (RKM Vivekananda Centenary and St. Xavier's) take the remaining spots.
9. State public universities make up the largest group in the Overall top 100
According to the Ministry of Education, the Overall top 100 includes 24 state public universities, 22 private deemed universities, 19 IITs & IISc, 9 private universities, 8 NITs and 7 central universities. Good education is not limited to IITs and central institutions.
10. The top names are stable — the real movement is in ranks 11–100
Most category leaders (IIT Madras, IISc, IIM Ahmedabad, AIIMS Delhi, NLSIU) have held their positions for years. For students, the more useful information is lower down the list, where state and private universities are moving up or down each year.
Key Takeaway: A college's NIRF rank tells you about its research, teaching resources and graduate outcomes at an institutional level. It does not tell you whether a specific course, campus or online program is right for you — use it as a shortlist tool, not as the final decision.
How NIRF Ranks Colleges — The 5 Parameters Explained
NIRF scores every institution out of 100 using five parameters. The weights below apply to the Overall and University categories; weights vary slightly for Colleges and subject domains.
Parameter | Weight | What it measures |
Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) | 30% | Student strength incl. PhD scholars, faculty-student ratio, faculty with PhD and experience, financial resources and their use |
Research & Professional Practice (RP) | 30% | Publications, citations and quality of research, patents, sponsored research and consultancy (retracted papers now attract negative marks) |
Graduation Outcomes (GO) | 20% | University exam results, placement and higher studies, median salary, PhD graduates |
Outreach & Inclusivity (OI) | 10% | Students from other states and countries, women students and faculty, economically and socially challenged students, facilities for differently-abled students |
Perception (PR) | 10% | Peer perception among academics and employers |
What NIRF 2025 Means for Students & Parents
How to use NIRF rankings to choose a college
1. Pick the right category. For B.Tech, check the Engineering list; for MBA, check Management; for BA/B.Com/B.Sc, check Colleges and Universities. The Overall rank alone can mislead.
2. Look at the score, not just the rank. Institutions separated by one or two ranks may differ by less than 0.1 points — for example, Jamia Millia Islamia (69.10) and Manipal (69.25) in the University list.
3. Open the institution's NIRF data file. Every ranked institution publishes the data it submitted — placements, median salary, faculty numbers — on nirfindia.org. This is often more useful than the rank.
4. Check at least three years. A college that has stayed in the top 50 for three years is more reliable than one that jumped once.
5. Combine NIRF with NAAC, fees and location. NIRF does not rank every college, and many good state and private institutions do not participate. Use NAAC grade, course fees, placement record and your budget alongside NIRF.
6. Book counselling before you decide. A rank cannot judge your aptitude. Take an ability test and speak to a counsellor to match the college to your goals.
Does NIRF matter for online degrees?
Yes — indirectly. Under UGC's regulations for Open & Distance Learning and Online programmes, one of the routes by which a university becomes eligible to offer online degrees is by being ranked in the top 100 of the NIRF University category, alongside NAAC-score based eligibility. This is why many of India's popular online universities also appear in NIRF. Always confirm the university and your specific program on the UGC-DEB entitled list (deb.ugc.ac.in) — a NIRF rank alone does not make an online program valid.
Here is where some universities that offer online degrees stand in the NIRF 2025 University category:
